چکیده

The Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) onboard EOS Terra measures global aerosol optical depth and optical properties since 2000. MODIS aerosol products are freely available and are being used for numerous studies. In this paper, we present a comparison of aerosol optical depth (AOD) retrieved from MODIS with Aerosol Robotic Network (AERONET) data for the year 2004 over Kanpur, an industrial city lying in the Ganga Basin in the northern part of India. AOD retrieved from MODIS (τaMODIS) at 0.55μm wavelength has been compared with the AERONET derived AOD (τaAERONET ), within an optimum space-time window. Although the correlation between τaMODIS and τaAERONET during the post-monsoon and winter seasons (R2∼ 0.71) is almost equal to that during the pre-monsoon and monsoon seasons (R2∼0.72), MODIS is found to overestimate AOD during the pre-monsoon and monsoon period (characterized by severe dust loading) and underestimate during the post-monsoon and winter seasons. The absolute difference between τaMODIS and τaAERONET is found to be low (0.12±0.11) during the non-dust loading season and much higher (0.4±0.2) during dust-loading seasons. The absolute error in τaMODIS is found to be about ∼25% of the absolute values of τaMODIS . Our comparison shows the importance of modifying the existing MODIS algorithm during the dustloading seasons, especially in the Ganga Basin in northern part of India.

Validation of MODIS aerosol optical depth retrieval over land

[1] Aerosol optical depths (ta) are derived operationally for the first time from the MODIS (Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) measurements over vegetated and partially vegetated land at 0.47 and 0.66 mm wavelengths. The extensive validation made during July – September 2000 encompasses 315 co-located ta in space and time derived by MODIS and AERONET (Aerosol Robotic Network) from ...

The MODIS Aerosol Algorithm, Products and Validation

The MODerate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) aboard both NASA's Terra and Aqua satellites is making near global daily observations of the earth in a wide spectral range (0.41 to 15 μm). These measurements are used to derive spectral aerosol optical thickness and aerosol size parameters over both land and ocean. The aerosol products available over land include aerosol optical thickn...

MODIS Retrieval of Aerosol Optical Depth over Turbid Coastal Water

We present a new approach to retrieve Aerosol Optical Depth (AOD) using the Moderate Resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer (MODIS) over the turbid coastal water. This approach supplements the operational Dark Target (DT) aerosol retrieval algorithm that currently does not conduct AOD retrieval in shallow waters that have visible sediments or sea-floor (i.e., Class 2 waters). Over the global coas...

An over-land aerosol optical depth data set for data assimilation by filtering, correction, and aggregation of MODIS Collection 5 optical depth retrievals

MODIS Collection 5 retrieved aerosol optical depth (AOD) over land (MOD04/MYD04) was evaluated using 4 years of matching AERONET observations, to assess its suitability for aerosol data assimilation in numerical weather prediction models. Examination of errors revealed important sources of variation in random errors (e.g., atmospheric path length, scattering angle “hot spot”), and systematic bi...
